Nutrition & Surgery

The Critical Care Nutrition Guidelines for enteral nutrition (EN) in postsurgical and trauma patients include:⁴

Initiation of EN within 24-48 hours of admission to the Surgical ICU following major surgery or trauma, and within 4-6 hours of severe burn injury, as appropriate.
Suggested routine use of an immunonutrition formula in the post-operative Surgical ICU.
